Our hair is one of the most noticeable features when it comes to maintaining our appearance. We will be going through in detail the anatomy of hair and the different types of hair textures, hair

Hair Anatomy 101

It is vital to know the basic structure of the hair to really understand what it needs for growth and nourishment. The structure of the hair is made up of 2 parts: the follicle and the shaft. The follicle is responsible for the growth and health of our hair while the shaft is made of Keratin – a fibrous protein. If you’re ever worried about losing too much hair, just be assured that most of the time it is perfectly normal to lose between 50-100 hair strands a day.

Determining your natural hair texture or type

Our genetics play an important role in determining what hair type category we fall under. The shape of the hair follicle we’re born with controls how our hair will grow. Round follicles grow straight hair, while oval-shaped follicles grow wavy hair and ribbon-shaped follicles grow curly hair. Although your DNA and genetics influence your hair, you do not need to leave the fate of your hair to it. With the secrets of Ayurveda and the advancement of science, healthy hair is possible for all hair types!

Ancient Hair Rituals

A little fun fact: The Sanskrit phrases ‘to oil’ & ‘to love” share the same word which is Sneha. This illustrates the deep-rooted ties Ayurveda has for hair care. The Ayurvedic tradition of oiling hair involves massaging natural, organic, nutrient-rich oils into the scalp, and hair strands nourish, strengthen and thicken the hair. Using hair oils to maintain healthy hair is a sign of a balanced Ayurvedic Dosha which is the 5 elements – Air (Vayu), Earth (Prithvi), Fire (Teja) Water (Jala) & Space (Aakash) being in equilibrium.

  • This concentrated decoction is added to base oil, like coconut oil which is also known as (Sneha Dravya) and is gently heated over many hours in specially designed containers to allow the water to completely evaporate.
  • It is cooked until the desired Roopa (consistency) & Varna (color) are achieved.
  • The final product is cooled, then filtered, and carefully preserved.
